the university of witwatersrand houses 2 provincial heritage sites , 2 heritage objects. great hall (technically façade of central block in great hall located), , dias cross housed in william cullen library both provincial heritage sites. formerly national monuments, until 1 april 2000 when national monuments council replaced new system made former national monuments responsibility of provincial governments following passage of national heritage resources act. heritage objects jan smuts study, housed in jan smuts house, , paul loewenstein collection of rock art. of university s national heritage sites , objects located on east campus.

wits institute of economic , social research (wiser)

the university of witwatersrand home wits institute of social , economic research (wiser), founded in 2001 deborah posel. institute has brought renowned speakers, both domestic , international, deliver thought-provoking conversations around interdisciplinary research award-winning novelists, fiston mwanza mujila, french author of tram83, make use buildings seminar room. no stranger own success, wiser fosters countries top, acclaimed academics achille mbembe, won prestigious geschwister-scholl-preis -german book prize- in 2015. university s faculty of humanities continues partner wiser, pathing way cultivation of intellect in both university , in wider community.


cradle of humankind

wits acquired sterkfontein , swartkrans sites in 1960s, both of rich in fossil remains of hominids. in 1999, area declared world heritage site unesco cradle of humankind. world heritage site, responsibility site shifted university government of gauteng province, provincial government becoming designated management authority responsible developing , protecting site. aided south african heritage resources agency, has declared area national heritage site. university s archaeology , palaeontology departments, within school of geosciences of faculty of science, continue play leading part in excavations of site; , wits retains ownership of sterkfontein s intellectual rights. professor lee berger discovered australopithecus sediba (2010) , homo naledi (2015) @ site.


museums

the university hosts @ least fourteen museums. these include adler museum of medicine, palaeontology museum , geology museum in gauteng province. displays include vast spectra not limited taung skull, various dinosaur fossils , butterflies.


rock art

the roberts-pager collection of khoisan rock art copies located in van riet lowe building on east campus.


johannesburg planetarium

the johannesburg planetarium first full-sized planetarium in africa , second in southern hemisphere. bought johannesburg municipality set part of celebration of city s seventieth anniversary. after acquiring old projector hamburg planetarium, modernised before being shipped south africa, municipality sold projector university use both academic facility instruction of students, , public amenity. plans new building house projector first drawn in 1958, , construction began in 1959. planetarium opened on 12 october 1960. johannesburg planetarium consulted media, , public, in order explain unusual occurrences in skies on south africa. in 2010, johannesburg planetarium celebrated golden jubilee.


wits art museum

the museums collection started in 1950s grew substantially. in 1972 gertrude posel gallery established on ground floor of senate house on east campus. joined in 1992 studio gallery formed lower gallery reserved display of african art. galleries collections grew steadily, studio gallery becoming renowned having 1 of best collections of african beadwork in world, , 2002 decided more space needed. thus, gertrude posel gallery , studio galley closed. ground floor of university corner selected site new wits art museum, houses collections after completed , launched in 2012.


wits theatre

the wits theatre performing arts complex within university, although caters professional companies, dance studios , schools. run university s performing arts administration (paa). prior opening of wits theatre, wits schools of dramatic art , music had been staging productions in building on campus called nunnery, former convent. nunnery has been retained teaching venue.
