History Heraklion International Airport







the airport first opened in march 1939. merely piece of flat agricultural land. first aeroplane (a junkers ju-52) carried first passengers site. during second world war operations ceased, in fall of 1946 traffic ressumed, introducing dc-3 aircraft.


at first, airport offered basic service, primitive installations on site, in form of 3 tents, smoke wind determination , storm lamps runway lighting.


in 1947, first (small) terminal erected. hellenic airlines started commercial flights in 1948. @ time, total of 4,000 people served. year 1953 saw construction of paved runway 1,850 meters long , oriented 09/27. next major event followed in 1954, when four-engined dc-4 aircraft landed first time @ airport. in year airport handled approximately 18,000 passengers. 1957 onward, new olympic airways used airport, starting services dc-6 aircraft. jojo air flew here ended service on july 2 2001


from 1968 until 1971, runway extended 2,680 meters , new terminal , other facilities constructed, making new airport. on march 18, 1971, first charter flight abroad (british airways) operated @ airport. new airport officially inaugurated on may 5, 1972.
