on 27 april 2009, villarreal cf spain signed 20-year-old montero five-year contract, effective start of 2009–10 campaign in la liga. on 19 july, contributed 2 goals , 5 assists valencians trounced amateurs navata 27–0; spent vast majority of first season, however, reserves in segunda división, being 1 of important attacking elements overachieved in first season in level, finishing seventh.

on 24 july 2014, montero signed premier league team swansea city on four-year contract undisclosed fee. made competitive debut on 16 august in opening game of season @ old trafford, replacing nathan dyer after 67 minutes of eventual 2–1 win on manchester united.

on 1 september 2017, montero loaned spanish top division club getafe cf in season-long move. played first league game 20 days later, featuring 15 minutes in 1–1 away draw celta de vigo.
