the a4 motorway, between zürich , brunnen passes through west of municipality, , town linked main roads , motorway junctions. other main roads connect town lucerne (along both banks of lake lucerne), gotthard pass , southern switzerland, , pfaffikon , einsiedeln in north of canton of schwyz. minor road crosses ibergeregg pass oberiberg, providing alternate route einsiedeln. other minor roads reach near summits of both haggenegg pass , holzegg pass, hiking trails cross these passes , continue alpthal.


schwyz railway station, on gotthard railway, located 2 km (1.2 mi) outside town, in parish of seewen. station served interregio und s-bahn trains.


early plans schweizerische südostbahn included proposal pfäffikon sz–arth-goldau railway terminate @ brunnen railway station instead of arth-goldau railway station. if proposal had come fruition, schwyz town centre have had railway station - on kollegi football field, , later in steisteg.


from 6 october 1900 14 december 1963, schwyzer strassenbahnen linked schwyz railway station town centre. on 8 may 1915, additional section between schwyz , brunnen see opened – , on same day, schwyz sbb–schwyz line shut down. trams replaced auto ag schwyz, today operates 12 bus lines in cantons of lucerne , schwyz.


the rotenfluebahn, gondola lift, links rickenbach summit of rotenfluh mountain, is, in summer, popular vantage point on lake lucerne region, and, in winter, ski area.
