española valley high school competes in new mexico activities association, classified 5a school in district 2 along with: bernalillo high school, capital high school, del norte high school , los alamos high school.


throughout history, espanola valley competed in 4a (until 2014), capturing 3 state championships in various sports, , eleven individual state champions. many graduates have gone participate in ncaa division i, division ii, , division iii athletics. in 2007, school set new mexico high school record major ncaa scholarships 8 graduating seniors. in 1989 , 2002 school voted nmaa sportsmanship award .

since 2006, evhs has competed in post–season state tournaments. program has been coached richard martinez since 2004. team made first state tournament in 2006 season, quarterfinals in 2007, semi-finals in 2008, , 2009. in 2010 season sundevils made state finals, losing roswell high school (63–60) @ university arena. after 5 years of appearances in tournament sundevils captured state title in 2011 season #2 seed, defeating goddard high school (55–52) leadership of senior rodney coles. record 22–9.
