the men s basketball team has strong history founding member of sun belt conference. after successful stint in late 1980s , 1990s, south alabama basketball declined in part of 2000s. in 2002 john pelphrey named coach , brought team winning ways. in 2006, south alabama won sun belt conference tournament, beating western kentucky 95-70 in championship game. earned bid 2006 ncaa tournament. first since ncaa bid since 1998 , seeded 14th in minneapolis bracket. lost 3rd-seeded florida gators, 76-50, went on win 2006 ncaa men s basketball tournament. 2005-2006 basketball season marked best turnaround in nation division basketball program. south alabama 10-18 in 2004-05 , went 24-7 in 2005-2006. yielded 12.5 differential lead nation, ahead of brigham young , memphis both had 11.5 differentials. south alabama followed 3 more 20-win seasons in row, , in 2008 received at-large bid ncaa tournament, lost butler university in first round. since sun belt expansion 13 members in 2006-2007 season, south alabama second western kentucky in conference winning percentage (65.3% wku s 76.4%).
