the construction of interstate 394 authorized in 1968. funding became available after canceled interstate 335 freeway project in 1978. interstate 335 had been planned northern loop around downtown minneapolis have passed through northeast minneapolis. money substituted interstate 394 project. construction of interstate 394 occurred in 1980s, starting @ western terminus in minnetonka , opening in sections toward downtown minneapolis throughout late 1980s. entire route of interstate 394 officially opened in 1991.
