española valley high school competes in new mexico activities association, classified 5a school in district 2 along with: bernalillo high school, capital high school, del norte high school , los alamos high school.

throughout history, espanola valley competed in 4a (until 2014), capturing 3 state championships in various sports, , eleven individual state champions. many graduates have gone participate in ncaa division i, division ii, , division iii athletics. in 2007, school set new mexico high school record major ncaa scholarships 8 graduating seniors. in 1989 , 2002 school voted nmaa sportsmanship award .

boys basketball

since 2006, evhs has competed in post–season state tournaments. program has been coached richard martinez since 2004. team made first state tournament in 2006 season, quarterfinals in 2007, semi-finals in 2008, , 2009. in 2010 season sundevils made state finals, losing roswell high school (63–60) @ university arena. after 5 years of appearances in tournament sundevils captured state title in 2011 season #2 seed, defeating goddard high school (55–52) leadership of senior rodney coles. record 22–9.

rivalries

evhs has maintained rivalry los alamos high school in competitive sports since opening. other rivals include: santa fe high school.

music program
band

española valley high s band sound of northern new mexico , led robert felix, nationally renowned. throughout 1980s band attended many competitions, including many college bowl games. in 1984, band attended tournament of roses parade in pasadena, california, band sent invitation committee, first parade. evhs 1 out of 4 schools in new mexico attend , march in rose parade.

mariachi

in late 1990s there no longer marching band @ española valley. music teacher alfonso trujillo started small mariachi band elective class. group named mariachi sol del valle , performed local events several years. in 2008 when presidential candidate barack obama stopped in espanola campaign rally band performed in event. months later schools band received invitation out of 1,400 schools throughout country participant in 2009 presidential inaugural parade in washington, d.c.

student organizations

there on 45 clubs, organizations , extracurricular activities @ evhs, notable supercomputing challenge has received many awards state competitions, m.e.s.a, sundevil torch , school s official student run newspaper, student school improvement team, , student council.

student council

the evhs student council member of new mexico association of student councils (nmasc), attends state conferences every year.

during 2013-14 school year, evhs student elected state president, becoming first ever elected state officer school. previously, student served state secretary 2011–12, becoming first state student council officer evhs. in fall of 2011, evhs student council selected host school annual conference , hosted 2014 nmasc state conference.
