on december 6, 2007, school s board of trustees approved addition of football intercollegiate athletics program. team began play in 2009 planned full transition ncaa football bowl subdivision (division i-a) 2013. on february 15, 2008, president gordon moulton , athletic director joe gottfried announced joey jones, former university of alabama , atlanta falcons receiver, first head football coach in university s history. in august 2009, president moulton hired dr. joel erdmann take on athletic director tapping erdmann s experience building sports programs , experience both football operations , game day programming. on september 5, 2009, south alabama jaguars defeated hargrave military academy 30-13 in first ever game, , finished first ever football season on november 12, 2009 shutout of ncaa division iii team 35-0 victory on huntingdon (ala.) college. usa completed first season undefeated @ 7-0, outscoring opponents combined score of 321-41. 2010 schedule made of schools national collegiate athletics association division i-fcs, ncaa division ii, , national association of intercollegiate athletics. usa finished season undefeated @ 10-0, outscoring opponents combined score of 413-130. on september 17, 2011, south alabama suffered first loss in new program s history when traveled carter-finley stadium in raleigh,nc against north carolina state wolfpack.


after week 3 game of 2011-2012 football season s. alabama s season record stood @ 2-1, all-time record of 19-1.
