the station built on site of sydney s earliest colonial cemetery, old sydney burial ground. in 2008, part of cemetery being excavated under town hall.


the station opened on 28 february 1932 , built 6 platforms, split on 2 levels 3 platforms on each level. when station opened, 4 of platforms in use: platforms 1, 2 , 3 on upper level , platform 6, served escalators, on lower level. other 2 platforms built in preparation proposed western suburbs line city gladesville, envisaged under bradfield scheme. line never built, , platforms (4 , 5) remained disused until incorporated eastern suburbs line when opened in june 1979.


the station concourse had major restructure in 2005 when shops inside closed make way increasing crowds.


during refurbishment of station in 2014, sign pointing air-raid shelter uncovered on staircase leading platforms 1 , 2. has been encased in persplex casing.
