north azerbaijani, or northern azerbaijani, official language of republic of azerbaijan. closely related modern day istanbul turkish, official language of turkey. spoken in southern dagestan, along caspian coast in southern caucasus mountains , in scattered regions throughout central asia. there 7.3 million first language speakers , 8 million second-language speakers.

south azerbaijani

south azerbaijani or iranian turkic, spoken in iranian azerbaijan (historic azerbaijan) and, lesser extent, in neighboring regions of iraq , turkey, smaller communities in syria. in iran, persian word azerbaijani turkic borrowed torki turkic . in iran, spoken in east azerbaijan , west azerbaijan, ardabil, zanjan, , parts of kurdistan, hamadan, markazi, qazvin , gilan. spoken in tehran , across tehran province, turks form far largest minority in city , wider province, comprising 25% 1/3, of total population. cia world factbook reports in 2010 percentage of south azerbaijani speakers @ around 16 percent of iranian population, or approximately 13 million people worldwide, , ethnic turks form far second largest ethnic group in iran, making language second spoken language in nation.


dialects of south azerbaijani include: aynallu (inallu, inanlu), qarapapaq, tabrizi, qashqai, afshari (afsar, afshar), shahsavani (shahseven), muqaddam, baharlu (kamesh), nafar, qaragözlü, pishaqchi, bayatlu, qajar.
