tyroc (real name troy stewart) resident superhero of island of marzal, existed in different dimension. brigadoon, marzal island reappear on earth. unlike legendary scottish village, marzal remained on earth several years @ time in location near coast of africa. in native language of marzal, tyroc means scream of devil .

tyroc , people descended african slaves revolted on ship during middle passage in 18th century. once slavers set adrift, liberated africans settled on own island off coast of africa, , built civilization. surprise, island paradise had brigadoon-like existence , disappeared dimension on regular schedule every 200 years.

left on own, islanders developed advanced, highly technological civilization, extreme isolationist tendencies. marzalians believed people of earth had ignored island. result, outsiders not welcome on marzal.

the legion of super-heroes first met tyroc when several legionnaires responded emergency on marzal island. @ first, tyroc attempted stop legion assisting. after patching differences , working save island, tyroc offered legion membership. refused, although had come admire tolerance , courage of legionnaires had met.

in later encounters, tyroc accepted legion s offer join team , became legion s first black member. tyroc , black lightning created dc attract new readers , provide more opportunities socially relevant stories.

until tyroc s addition legion, every humanoid alien in legion stories drawn caucasian facial features, including orange-skinned chameleon boy, blue-skinned shadow lass, , green-skinned, blonde haired brainiac 5.

tyroc later returned marzal island people when left earth reality. shadow lass , dawnstar, accompanying him, trapped on island shifted dimensions.

marzal s destruction @ hands of dominion documented during fourth volume of legion of super-heroes series while keith giffen writer. dominators managed destroy marzal island within dimensional pocket. earth recovering dominion takeover chose war heroes lead them. jacques foccart (the second invisible kid) , troy stewart, had proven effective leaders of rebel forces, rewarded public offices people of earth. troy stewart became planet s vice president, , jacques became president. thereafter, earth destroyed in disaster reminiscent of destruction of krypton on millennium earlier. few dozen cities , inhabitants survived, , planet reconstituted new earth. eventually, jacques resigned rejoin legion, , troy ascended presidency.

tyroc did not appear in legion s second major continuity, ran 1994 through end of 2004. in threeboot continuity began in 2005, tyroc appears briefly (with several other legionnaires previous incarnations of team such blok , dawnstar) in legion of super-heroes v5 #15, character in campfire story showing legion s influence, , urban legends , myths have sprung around it. appearance cameo, , not seem take place in series actual continuity.
