newt adults , larvae housed in cassette-type water tanks in aquarium package within aquatic animal experiment unit (aaeu), developed nasda, japanese space agency. aaeu life support unit can keep fish or other aquatic animals alive @ least 19 days in spacelab. consists of main unit, aquarium package, , fish package, each of has independent life support system. in iml-2, each cassette held egg container individual egg holes (6-mm diameter, approximately 12 mm deep).


a slow rotating centrifuge microscope , camera system, nizemi, developed dlr (formerly dara), german space agency, used examine , videotape behavior of jellyfish ephyrae , polyps @ 15 varying levels of g , @ temperature of 28 °c (to facilitate swimming activity). nizemi provides observation of samples under variable acceleration levels between 10–3 , 1.5 g , controllable temperature between 18 , 37 °c.

the pembsis experiment used hardware provided national space development agency (nasda) of japan. part of nasda life science cell culture kit, experiment used 6 petri-dish-like plant fixation chambers (pfcs). pfcs used hold cultured plant cells pembsis experiment. these containers sealed. pfcs allow plant cells exposed space flight fixed in orbit insertion of chemical fixative via syringe through septum port.
