following 1994 elections, south africa governed under interim constitution. constitution required constituent assembly (ca) draft , approve permanent constitution 9 may 1996.


the government of national unity (gnu) established under interim constitution ostensibly remained in effect until 1999 national elections. parties comprising gnu – african national congress (anc), national party (np), , inkatha freedom party (ifp) – shared executive power. on 30 june 1996, np withdrew gnu become part of opposition.
