azeri vowel chart, mokari & werner (2016:?)

the vowels of azerbaijani are, in alphabetical order, /ɑ/, e /e/, ə /æ/, ı /ɯ/, /i/, o /o/, ö /œ/, u /u/, ü /y/. there no diphthongs in azerbaijani when 2 vowels come together; when occurs in arabic loanwords, each vowel retains individual sound.

the typical phonetic quality of azeri vowels follows:

/i, u, æ/ close cardinal [i, u, a].
/y/ close near-front [y̠].
/œ/ , /ɯ/ differ 1 rounding. quality more or less close-mid central [ɵ, ɘ]. phonologically however, more distinct: /œ/ phonologically mid front rounded vowel, front counterpart of /o/. /ɯ/ phonologically close unrounded vowel, counterpart of /i/.
the other mid vowels /e, o/ closer close-mid [e, o] open-mid [ɛ, ɔ].
/ɑ/ phonetically near-open [ɑ̝].
