after holocaust, of few jews returned berlin immigrants eastern europe. chairman heinz galinski promoted grounds of former fasanenstrasse synagogue chosen building of new jewish community centre (jüdisches gemeindehaus fasanenstrasse). on 10 november 1957, west berlin mayor willy brandt attended ceremony of laying cornerstone. old ruins removed, few surviving elements, such main portal, kept decoration of new building designed in modern style of 1950s. gemeindehaus inaugurated on september 27, 1959.


on november 9, 1969, during ceremonies commemorate kristallnacht, tupamaros west-berlin attempted attack community center; bomb, supplied undercover government agent peter urbach, failed explode.


since 2006 building hosts jewish adult education centre , administrative departments community center has moved new synagogue on oranienburger strasse.
