aborigines

aboriginal people first live @ phillip bay , la perouse. presence recorded arthur phillip , french expedition led lapérouse arrived within 6 days of each other in january 1788. camp established @ phillip bay in 1883, under aborigines protection board. settlement has been run variety of church , welfare groups on time. reserve moved unstable sand around elaroo avenue area, @ end of 1920s. area owned aboriginal people, yarra bay house , headland between frenchmans bay , yarra bay.


europeans

the first fleet ship hms supply carrying captain arthur phillip arrived in botany bay on 18 january 1788. anchorage named phillip bay . examination of immediate vicinity phillip concluded area unsuitable habitation . after arrival of captain john hunter in hms sirius on 20th of january, phillip, hunter , 2 other men explored coast northwards boat, finding port jackson. fleet relocated became sydney cove.


the adjacent suburb la perouse named after jean-françois de galaup, comte de la pérouse arrived @ botany bay on 26 january 1788 first fleet being relocated. phillip bay renamed yarra bay based on aboriginal name while suburb has retained original european name.


the area around la perouse developed many seaside suburbs did through outdoor pastimes , weekend visitors, after tram line built in around 1900. many unemployed people built makeshift homes in phillip bay area during great depression of 1920s , 1930s. happy valley , hill 60 north , housed white people, while aboriginal people lived in frog hollow area south.


yarra bay house

yarra bay house built in 1903 addition cable station @ la perouse. when second cable laid in 1890, room needed house workers. when cable station became obsolete after 1917, house home various government departments including director of public instruction (later education department) , department of youth , community services.


in 1985, title given aboriginal land council. freshwater billabong has been constructed @ of yarra bay house encourage return of local frogs , birdlife. restoration of building being carried out of 2009.
