devlin born in cookstown, county tyrone, roman catholic family. attended st patrick s girls academy in dungannon. studying psychology @ queen s university belfast in 1968 when took prominent role in student-led civil rights organisation, people s democracy. devlin subsequently excluded university.


she stood unsuccessfully against james chichester-clark in 1969 northern ireland general election. when george forrest, mp mid ulster, died, fought subsequent by-election on unity ticket, defeating ulster unionist party candidate, forrest s widow anna, , elected westminster parliament. aged 21, youngest mp @ time, , remained youngest woman ever elected westminster until may 2015 general election when 20-year-old mhairi black broke devlin s record.


devlin stood on slogan take seat , fight rights – signalling rejection of traditional irish republican tactic of abstentionism (being absent westminster). on 22 april 1969, day before 22nd birthday, swore oath of allegiance , made maiden speech within hour.
