jackson pollock had first museum show @ sfmoma, did clyfford still , arshile gorky. museum has in collection important works henri matisse, jean metzinger, paul klee, marcel duchamp, andy warhol, jackson pollock, richard diebenkorn, clyfford still , ansel adams, among others. annually, museum hosts more twenty exhibitions , on 3 hundred educational programs. while museum’s building closed expansion, summer 2013 through 2016, sfmoma presented exhibitions , programs @ off-site locations around bay area part of sfmoma on go.

in 2009, museum gained custodial relationship contemporary art collection of doris , donald fisher of gap inc.. fisher collection includes 1,100 works artists such alexander calder, chuck close, willem de kooning, richard diebenkorn, anselm kiefer, ellsworth kelly, roy lichtenstein, brice marden, agnes martin, gerhard richter, richard serra, cy twombly, , andy warhol, among many others. collection on loan sfmoma period of 100 years.

in february 2011, museum publicly launched collections campaign, announcing acquisition of 195 works including paintings jackson pollock, willem de kooning, jasper johns, robert rauschenberg , francis bacon. under auspices of collections campaign, promised gifts of 473 photographs announced in 2012, including 26 works diane arbus , significant gifts of japanese photography. works acquired through collections campaign displayed along fisher collection in museum s expanded building, completed in 2016.

sfmoma s website allows users browse museum s permanent collection. sfmoma app allows visitors use mobile phones follow guided visit of museum @ own pace while app tracks location.

sfmoma s research library established in 1935 , contains extensive resources pertaining modern , contemporary art, including books, periodicals, artists’ files,photographs , media collections.
