formation , years

boredoms formed in 1986 yamantaka eye, @ time acted front man infamous , highly controversial noise/performance art act hanatarash, locally notorious extremely dangerous live shows consisting entirely of on-stage destruction , complete disregard audience s safety. antics of hanatarash later highly influential on earliest incarnation of boredoms, formed remaining members of band eye started hanatarash drummer ikuo taketani, guitarist tabata mitsuru (known tabata mara), bassist hosoi hisato, , vocalist makki sasarato, called acid makki & combi , zombie . band s sound characterized violent, noisy punk rock/no wave thrashings. recorded single track, u.s.a. , compilation tape. shortly after release of first song, taketani replaced on drums yoshikawa toyohito, friend of eye s. band officially changed name boredoms after hira replaced hosoi on bass, , sasarato left band due creative differences. band s name comes buzzcocks song boredom .


with band reaching level of stability, eye , tabata recorded first official ep, anal anal, in mid-1986. in 1987, tabata left group later join zeni geva , replaced seiichi yamamoto guitar player. in march 1988, band released first full-length, osorezan no stooges kyo. due unhappiness on yoshikawa s drumming, yoshimi p-we eye s hanatarash-related project ufo or die asked serve drummer, becoming first female member of band, yoshikawa switching general percussion. shortly after change yoshikawa left group, replaced chew hasegawa (now of japanese funeral doom band corrupted) , kazuya nishimura, known stage name atari. band s sound period marked harsh, dissonant punk edited extensively eye in studio, citing sonic youth , funkadelic influences, among others. style seen pointlessly abrasive without underlying motive, making boredoms nihlistic absolute music, according critics; however, strangeness of record increased band s popularity in musical underground.

in 1988 , 1989, eye found himself making friends sonic youth , worked extensively john zorn s polystylistic naked city project, serving guest vocalist. after release of boredoms album soul discharge in united states, band able parlay growing popularity long term record deals warner bros. records in japan , united states imprint reprise records. release of band s critically acclaimed pop tatari, seen 1 of strangest albums ever released major label, boredoms took road , toured sonic youth in 1992, nirvana 8 consecutive shows in late october , november 1993, , brutal truth in 1993. during period, band asked steve albini record track compilation recording. shortly after eye again collaborated john zorn on ep under name mystic fugu orchestra, notably first album released on zorn s tzadik records.

in 1999, band released vision creation newsun in japan. album saw evolution in sound, combining evolving space rock themes explored in super roots eps , preceding album super æ more earthly, primal, primitively worshipful inspiration . features psychedelic soundscaping , cosmic synths , complex tribal drumming, cathartic celebrations of noise , , eye s unique power electronic , turntabalistic stylings. album considered band s greatest achievement far, , has been described critics blending manic, high-speed, cut-up form punk rock of earlier albums new sound intense , exhilarating, more beautiful , more expansive .


after release, eye oversaw series of remix albums of boredoms catalogue guest djs. after final remix album, eye s own rebore, vol. 0, released in 2000, boredoms seemed disappear few years no releases or tour dates, while members participated in various side projects , other bands.

later activities

rumors band had broken began circulate, smaller ensemble called v∞redoms resurfaced in 2003. group s line-up had changed considerably upon return, stripping down smaller ensemble yamantaka eye on vocals, izumi kiyoshi (who had performed on vision creation newsun , super æ) on synthesizer, , yoshimi p-we, nishimura, , eda playing drums , percussion.


despite changes, group s music still revolves around tribal drumming patterns heard on vision creation newsun. band signed vice records releases in united states since had been dropped reprise. super roots releases reissued on vice in 2007 (with exclusion of super roots 2). in late 2004, boredoms released first album group in 4 years, seadrum/house of sun, of had been recorded before band s brief hiatus. release saw band move label wea japan smaller japanese label commmons. album not celebrated extent of previous albums, yet still garnered positive reviews, culminating exemplary score of 73% on metacritic. following release, eda left band , went on form audio-visual project adrena adrena visual artist daisy dickinson. eda replaced in boredoms yojiro tatekawa.


in 2007, group released super roots 9, first addition super roots series since 1999 , first major release since seadrum/house of sun. recorded during christmas eve 2004 concert, making band s third official live release since 1998 s super seeeeee!!!!!! video (discounting disc 2 of vision creation newsun boxset, included 35-minute excerpt of live concert). super roots 9 saw band move warner international smaller japanese label commmons domestic releases , american label thrill jockey overseas. later, in april, group (as v∞redoms) played 3 dates sonic youth in japan. band planned attempt using newly developed contact microphones record sounds made human body while dancing.


the band released live dvd/cd combination called live @ sunflancisco in december 2007 followed remix single voaltz / relerer in august 2008, while eye , yoshimi have come out new records of own year. during 2008 united states tour iron & wine, eye used new seven-necked guitar called sevener or sevena .


the band released addition super roots ep series, titled super roots 10, on january 28, 2009.


boadrum concerts

on july 7, 2007, boredoms performed concert entitled 77 boadrum in brooklyn bridge park, new york city, drummer muneomi senju replacing nishimura. 77 denoted not date (7/7/2007) number of drummers in ensemble. eye has said number 77 became significant him when climbed sun temple , counted 77 steps.


the band continued concept on august 8, 2008, 2 concerts called 88 boadrum held in los angeles , brooklyn. boredoms headlined los angeles show while gang gang dance conducted brooklyn show.


a third concert, boadrum 9, took place on september 9, 2009 @ terminal 5 in new york city. featured 9 drummers in total, 2 boredoms (yoshimi , yojiro) , 7 others prominent experimental music acts, namely zach hill (hella), hisham bharoocha (soft circle, ex: black dice, lightning bolt), butchy fuego (pit er pat), kid millions (oneida), jeremy hyman (ponytail), dave nuss (no-neck blues band) , aaron moore (volcano bear)


in 2010, boredoms toured internationally including 2 boadrum performances @ tomorrow s parties curated matt groening @ butlins minehead, england, in addition shows in london, japan, mexico , part of melbourne international arts festival on october 10, 2010.


in 2011, boredoms premiered new material @ tomorrows parties ll mirror festival in tokyo. 6 drummers arranged in circle around eye, used motion sensors trigger ambient drone soundscapes created shinji masuko corresponded each drummer. music featured highly repetitive motorik rhythms grew in complexity on course of hour long set. band chosen jeff mangum of neutral milk hotel perform @ tomorrow s parties festival curated in march 2012 in minehead, england. gig (performed twice during festival) featured 14 guitarists , 6 drummers.


in june, 2015, boredoms performed development of boardrum series @ barbican centre in london, uk part of doug aitken s station station: 30-day happening. performance featured eye, yoshimi, tatekawa, masuko, , expanded lineup of drummers , guitarists surrounded 88 percussionists playing cymbals.
