headquarters, united states air force authorized reassignment of 1st fighter wing (air defense) aerospace defense command tactical air command on 30 july 1970. 3 days later, hq adc directed commander of 26th air division move headquarters, 1st fighter wing (air defense) hamilton afb, california, macdill afb, florida. units moved without personnel or equipment. personnel , equipment formerly of 15th tactical fighter wing reassigned 1st tfw. squadrons of 15 tfw assigned historic wing: 45th, 46th, , 47th tactical fighter squadrons. organizational change effective 1 july 1971 transferred wing 836th air division, inactivated on date, ninth air force.


completing wing s historic preservation, commanders of 3 squadrons participated in shoot-out @ avon park air force range determine squadrons receive designations of 27th, 71st, , 94th. commander of 47 tfs marked highest score, , chose 94 tfs; 46 tfs placed second, choosing 27 tfs, leaving 45 tfs squadron having shortest history, 71 tfs.


the wing spent next 4 years providing advanced tactical training f-4 phantom ii , b-57 canberra aircrews, of whom later saw service in vietnam war. on 1 october 1971, hq tac inactivated 4530th tactical training squadron, which, in addition other duties, had trained australian f-4 aircrew members , maintenance personnel during project peace reef. 4501st tactical fighter replacement squadron, equipped f-4s, assumed 4530th s place in wing s structure on same date. command inactivated 4424th combat crew training squadron, wing s b-57 training unit, on 30 june 1972, leaving wing 4 flying squadrons. conducted advanced f-4 tactical training.


on 14 march 1974, air force publicly announced plans station air force s first operational f-15 wing @ langley air force base, virginia. langley chosen due heritage , ideal location tac s secondary air defense mission. after studying heritage of wings, tac selected 1st fighter wing unit receive first eagle. on 6 june 1975, tactical air command directed ninth air force move 1st fighter wing macdill langley afb. although designation of unit moved, majority of macdill personnel remained in place, , served under newly designated 56th tactical fighter wing.
