born in penafiel, fonte finished football education (after having played there ages 10–13) @ sporting clube de portugal, appeared reserves senior, in third division. in 2004 signed s.c. salgueiros, club in severe financial difficulties , liquidated shortly thereafter; result terminated contract , transferred f.c. felgueiras, in segunda liga.

in 2005 off-season, fonte made primeira liga debut vitória de setúbal, performances attracted eye of s.l. benfica, signed him in january 2006, loaning him out fellow league side f.c. paços de ferreira; finished season 26 league appearances , 1 goal – during 2–2 away draw against f.c. penafiel scored 2 in own net– both paços , setúbal managed maintain status.

fonte spent 2006–07 season on loan c.f. estrela da amadora, still in top division, missing 5 league games lisbon-based club finished in ninth position.

crystal palace

in 2007, fonte moved on loan crystal palace in england, being introduced in side s starting xi after run of injuries. move made permanent @ end of season, palace finished fifth , qualified promotion play-offs.
