the island has north southwestern direction , 12 kilometres (7 miles) long , 6 kilometres (4 miles) wide on average. coastline indented inlets, capes , peninsulas. southeast , southwest parts have gentler slopes , settlements , facilities located. terrain more rugged on north coast, highest peak @ 433 m (1,421 feet) on mount karafiltzanaka (39°11′25″n 23°28′07″e / 39.1904°n 23.4685°e / 39.1904; 23.4685).


the main town skiathos (pop. 4,883 in 2011), in eastern part of island. other main settlements kalyvia (312), troullos (158), Χanemos (143), koukounaries (119), , achladias (118).
