early life

peg leg bates born clayton bates on october 10, 1907 in fountain inn, south carolina, son of rufus , emma w stewart bates. mother sharecropper. age of 5, bates dancing on streets of fountain inn pennies , nickels; lost leg @ age of 12 in cotton gin accident. uncle, wit, made crude first peg leg after returning home world war , finding nephew handicapped. bates subsequently taught himself tap dance wooden peg leg. time 15, bates again adept enough @ dancing enter amateur talent shows, working way employment performers circuit supplied entertainers african-american theaters in us.

at 20, bates dancing on broadway. in 1940s, @ paradise club in atlantic city, new jersey, bates jet plane finale, in leaped on stage, landed on wooden leg, , executed series of backward hops accompanied trumpet blasts band, saw leg puncture wooden stage floor. took half hour pull him out. after that, stage floor reinforced metal sheeting. bates performed on ed sullivan show 22 times, , had 2 command performances before king & queen of england in 1936 , again in 1938. during uso hospital tour, partnered vaudeville tap dancer dixie roberts, said danced better 1 leg else two. part of first louis armstrong tour of britain in mid 1950s.

he owned , operated peg leg bates country club in kerhonkson, new york, 1951 1987, along wife alice e. bates. made bates first black resort owner in ulster county in catskill mountains, famous borscht belt of jewish resorts, hotels, , bungalow colonies. bates began 4 rooms @ country club resort; 1985, there 110 units guests. leased resort in 1989, due death of wife in 1987.


later life

though retired show business in 1989, bates still performed various groups, including senior citizens, children , disabled individuals. active in local ellenville lions club, , during last ten years of life traveled regularly schools, senior citizen centers, , nursing homes showing video life , talking life experiences. helped found local senior citizens center in ellenville / kerhonkson area.
