History of the position Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia







the last crown prince of second saudi state abdulaziz ibn abdul ramhan ibn saud, lost title when father lost state house of rashid in 19th century. father abdicated pretended throne him in 1900, , began famous wars of conquest of become third saudi state. when had taken enough land become recognized genuine emir, designated eldest son turki heir. when turki died during flu pandemic of 1919, child still in utero, , abdulaziz designated second son saud heir , further succession brother brother.


when unification of saudi arabia complete in 1932, abdulaziz had himself declared king, , year later saud declared crown prince.


when old king died in 1953, saud became king and, planned, brother faisal declared crown prince. things became complicated. king , heir began feuding: feisal took title prime minister while, , on occasion took on government against king s wishes. saud fought back, , things came head in 1964, when feisal forced brother abdicate , became king. next in line, prince mohammed, crown prince short time resigned in favor of prince khalid in 1965.


with khalid not interested in being king, crown prince, fahd, took reins of power. when king fahd had stroke in 1995, crown prince abdullah became formal regent balance of reign.


as nation became gerontocracy in 2000s , 10s, 3 crown princes died of old age in rapid succession. in meantime, more , more princes passed over. in january 2015, ibn saud s last son, muqrin, became crown prince, ousted 3 months later in favor of nephew, mohammed bin nayef. mohammed bin nayef himself deposed in june 2017, , replaced mohammad bin salman.
