in december 1914, 3 months after being raised regiment sailed egypt arriving on 1 february 1915. when australian foot infantry left egypt take part in gallipoli campaign, light horse regiments left behind, authorities believing mounted troops not needed in campaign. however, casualties amongst australian infantry severe decided send light horsemen without horses, infantry reinforcements. 6th light horse landed on peninsula on 20 may 1915. attached 1st division, , made responsible defence of right flank of australian , new zealand army corps position. during campaign fought defensive actions around anzac cove beachhead, until being withdrawn in december 1915 part of allied evacuation peninsula.
