generic division

many scientists still place selaginellales in class lycopodiopsida (often misconstructed lycopsida ). modern authors recognize 3 generic divisions of selaginella: selaginella, bryodesma sojak 1992, , lycopodioides boehm 1760. lycopodioides include north american species s. apoda , s. eclipes, while bryodesma include s. rupestris (as bryodesma rupestre). stachygynandrum used include bulk of species.

the first major attempt define , subdivide group palisot de beauvois in 1803-1805. established genus selaginella monotypic genus, , placed bulk of species in stachygynandrum. gymnogynum monotypic genus, name superseded own earlier name of didiclis. turns out, today, group of around 45-50 species known articulatae, since didiclis/gymnogynum genus based on selaginella plumosa. described genus diplostachyum include group of species similar selaginella apoda. spring inflated genus selaginella hold selaginelloid species 4 decades later.

phylogenetic studies korall & kenrick determined euselaginella group, comprising solely type species, selaginella selaginoides , closely related hawaiian species, selaginella deflexa, basal , anciently diverging sister other selaginella species. beyond this, study split remainder of species 2 broad groups, 1 including bryodesma species, articulatae, section ericetorum jermy , others, , other centered on broad stachygynandrum group.
