Geology Coal in South Africa



the surface exposure of rocks belonging karoo supergroup. south africa s coal occurs in ecca group (coloured mustard yellow). these rocks deposited in vast inland lake or sea, when africa part of gondwana. along northern , north-eastern shores of body of water marshes formed peat, , turned coal.

the largest coal deposits in south africa found in ecca deposits, stratum of karoo supergroup, dating permian period, between 280 , 250 ma. ecca group extensive, covering around 2 thirds of south africa (much of covered younger rocks - see diagram on left). northern , north-eastern portion of these ecca deposits coal-bearing, nevertheless contains more third of coal reserves in southern hemisphere.
