the french revolution reached geneva in 1792, , in february 1794, republic gave new, revolutionary constitution proclaimed equality of citizens. after death of robespierre in july of same year, there counter-revolution, gained upper hand 1796. prompted french invasion of 1798, , annexation of geneva part of french département du léman. geneva joined swiss confederation in 1815 22nd canton, having been enlarged french , savoyard territories @ vienna congress (see restoration , regeneration).
