Mugam Culture of Azerbaijan



the classical music of azerbaijan called mugam (more accurately spelled muğam), , suite poetry , instrumental interludes. sung poetry includes tahrir segments, use form of throat singing similar yodelling. poetry typically divine love , linked sufi islam. in contrast mugam traditions of central asian countries, azeri mugam more free-form , less rigid; compared improvised field of jazz. unesco proclaimed azerbaijani mugam tradition masterpiece of oral , intangible heritage of humanity on 7 november 2003. meykhana , mugham 1 of many musical traditions of azerbaijan. during mugam, singers have transform emotions singing , music. mugham singer alim qasimov revered 1 of 5 best singers of time. meykhana kind of traditional azeri distinctive folk unaccompanied song, performed several people improvising on particular subject. among national musical instruments there fourteen string instruments, 8 percussion instruments , 6 wind instruments.

the mugham festival founded , traditionally celebrated in azerbaijani city of shusha. last mugham festival in shusha took place in 1988. because of conflict in karabakh region, shusha has been occupied armenian forces since 1992 , azeris have fled city. today festival lives on , has been held in shaki since november 1994. every year thousands of people participate in festival.
