aborfield

the origins of name arborfield remain uncertain. family first recorded in 1166 in edburgefeld, meaning edburga s field , (edburga being widespread saxon lady s name) evolved through variations modern arborfield first recorded in 17th century.


the earliest recording of family osemundus bulloc in pipe rolls of berkshire in 1166. herald’s visitations of 15th century record son, richard, , these, , later visitations, carry descent in unbroken line edward bullock of faulkbourne in 1664.


richard’s son, gilbert, made formal declaration in 1250 of holding of manor of sunning bishop of salisbury.


robert bullock 3rd of aborfield knight of shire berkshire (1382) , sheriff counties of berkshire , oxfordshire in 1384 , 1392 under king richard ii of england. in 1394, commissioner of peace berkshire. robert had no male issue, aborfield estates passed in due course grandson of uncle gilbert (a younger brother), thomas bullock 1st.


thomas 2nd gentleman usher extraordinary henry viii in 1516 , 1 of commissioners berkshire collecting subsidy king henry viii in 1523. in 1544, supplied archers, billmen , horses war france – leading 7 bills in family crest. thomas’s uncle, hugh ye brazen hand , left aberfield found family branch in siddenhall (sidnall) in sallop (shropshire).


thomas 3rd (1546–1595) high sheriff of berkshire in 1581 , in commission of peace in 1592. last of arborfield, being obliged sell estates, manors of arberfield , barkham lying in towns, villages , fields of arberfeld, barkham, hurst, ockingham, shingfield , erley, due accumulated debts. uncle, george, refused hand on deeds. thomas forced family produce deed of entail and, having received title deeds, repudiated deed. brother , heir, william, litigated through court of chancery , star chamber sale confirmed.


when thomas 3rd died, william, support of tenants, entered possession in serious contempt of court resulting in him being thrown fleet prison. william continued actions recover estate in queen’s bench, court of common pleas , petitioned queen, privy council , lord keeper in vain.


william, released prison , of stratfield mortimer, married well, third wife being elizabeth bellet of morton in essex, restoring family fortunes.


his son, john, moved family manor house of mulsham, @ great wigborough in essex purchased estates @ loftes in great , little totham. these estates remained in family until death of edward 5th of faulkbourne in 1705.

sir edward bullock (c. 1580 - 1644) elder son of edward bullock of wigborough , loftes in great totham , joan collen of high laver, essex. knighted king james , cavalier during english civil war. acquired manor of faulkbourne , faulkbourne hall in 1637 held bullock family 260 years on 10 generations.


sir edward married elizabeth, daughter, , heiress, of thomas wylde of glazeley hall (d. 1598), salop , kempsey, worcestershire , sister of sir edmund wylde, fellow of royal society , friend of sir william petty, great grandfather of william petty fitzmaurice,1st marquess of lansdowne , future prime minister of great britain.


in 1602, obtained william camden, clarenceux king of arms, confirmation of arms of bullocks of aborfield due difference mark descent younger son.


on 3 july 1609 knighted king james @ richmond palace.


in days of reign of king charles i, appointed forced ‘loan’ collector county of norfolk whilst living in pentney, c. 1622-31. accounts returned on 12 june 1627 show result of commission, paid sum of £1,200 royal exchequer. unpopular loans hastened rupture between king , parliament.


sir edward’s public , social duties resulted in heavy expenditure on death, outlying estates of loftes, little mapelstead , finchingfield amongst others sold. died in 1644 , buried @ church of st germanus @ faulkbourne.


throughout 17th , 18th centuries, family thrived through series of marriages wealthy heiresses.


edward 5th (1663–1705) lord of 7 manors , sat member of parliament county of essex in 1698 , later borough of colchester in 1703.


he became deputy lieutenant of county of essex , high sheriff of essex in 1696 , 1703. marrying elizabeth, elder daughter of sir mark guyon kt of coggeshall, large estates @ coggeshall, maplestead , finchingfield added. sir mark sheriff of essex in 1676. after death of elizabeth, married second time mary, daughter of sir josiah child of wanstead. sir josiah thoroughly opposed marriage , left daughter mere £5 in , no more because hath married not without consent expressly against command , contrary own repeated promises , lette others learne example .


through sir mark’s younger daughter, rachel, married edward’s younger brother, john bullock, sir mark’s estates @ radwinter , great wigborough came family , passed intestacy colonel john bullock.


edward’s son, josiah (1697–1752), attempted follow child grandfather , make fortune in trade. spent of life in london – in highgate , city – royal exchange director , hambro merchant. though local j.p. , d.l., neglected duties @ faulkbourne.


colonel john bullock (1731–1809), josiah’s son, had portrait painted thomas gainsborough. colonel in east essex militia. educated @ clare hall cambridge, @ age of 23 embarked on parliamentary career lasted 56 years culminated in him becoming father of house. took keen interest in faulkbourne , undertook many improvements house , grounds. patron of arts, founded wide-ranging collection of pictures. whilst wife elizabeth considerable heiress large slum estates in southwark on 17 acres containing 400 houses, exhausted large part of fortune on parliamentary life. died in 1793 , had no children. left estates on death, in 1809, jonathan josiah christopher watson, son of elder sister, elizabeth, had married jonathan watson jp dl frs of ringhall in suffolk.


jonathan josiah christopher watson (1749–1832) succeeded essex estates directly uncle, colonel, in 1809 and, in following year, took surname bullock, rather watson, under royal sign manual, subject £24,000 of debt. jonathan major in east essex militia.


his eldest son, jonathan (1773–1860), served in 1st dragoon guards , justice of peace, deputy lieutenant and, in 1837, high sheriff of essex. did not marry heiress vicar of witham’s daughter. jonathan josiah s second son, john (1775-1844), became rector of radwinter , faulkbourn , great-grandfather of guy bullock.


after jonathan’s death in 1860, pressure of social , economic change of 19th century brought beginnings of family’s decline @ faulkbourne. properties began sold when walter trevelyan (1818–1878) inherited, leaving faulkbourne , radwinter estates in family.


rev. walter trevelyan bullock’s (1818–1878) 3 elder brothers predeceased him. had been rector of faulkbourne until 1852 before moving devon. after year, had return faulkbourne on death of brother. lived in london and, on visit faulkbourne, accidentally poisoned himself , died in 1878. walter trevelyan s sister, margaret emily (1822–1913), married rev. hon. llewellyn charles robert irby, younget son of george irby, 3rd baron boston.


his eldest son, walter henry bullock (1861–1924), last of faulkbourne senior male lineage. during youth, trustees carried out extensive repairs house never permanently in residence @ faulkbourne. in 1892, of tapestries , chief pictures, such fitted aubusson tapestries , gainsborough’s portrait of colonel john sold.


the property sold andrew motion in 1897 , turn of century had been sold christopher william oxley parker. 1907 marriage of emily margaret bullock, daughter of walter henry bullock, frederick parker, relative of estate s new owner, meant bullock family continued association faulkbourne 20th century.

walter henry died in 1924. son, henry talbot bouverie, had daughter. therefore, family line passed through walter henry’s brother, rev llewellyn christopher watson (1886–1936). married cecil augusta margaret bullock (née spearman), mother, lady maria louisa spearman (1837-1917), daughter of thomas fitzmaurice, 5th earl of orkney, himself greatnephew of prime minister william petty-fitzmaurice, 1st marquess of landsdowne.


the line passed eldest son, professor walter llewellyn bullock (1890–1944). scholar, critic, teacher, lecturer , promoter of italian studies @ universities of chicago , of manchester, serena professor of italian.


the line passed llewellyn’s second son, sir christopher bullock, k.c.b, c.b.e.(1891–1972). permanent under-secretary @ british air ministry 1931 1936. appointed @ age of 38, remains 1 of youngest civil servants have headed british government department.


he succeeded elder son, richard henry watson bullock c.b.(1920–1998), deputy permanent secretary @ department of trade , industry.


richard, in turn, succeeded son, actor , art historian osmund bullock, current head of family.


sir christopher s younger son, edward anthony watson bullock (1926 - 2015) served in foreign , commonwealth office , married jenifer, elder daughter of sir richmond , lady palmer.
