bay village site of november 1942 fire @ cocoanut grove nightclub, in 492 people lost lives. terrible aftermath led creation , enforcement of stringent fire codes across us, in hope of preventing other such tragedies. marking 50th anniversary of incident, bay village neighborhood association placed memorial plaque in brick sidewalk near club’s former site on piedmont street, partially occupied revere hotel (formerly radisson hotel). plaque states:



the cocoanut grove. erected bay village neighborhood association, 1993. in memory of more 490 people died in cocoanut grove fire on november 28, 1942. result of terrible tragedy, major changes made in fire codes, , improvements in treatment of burn victims, not in boston across nation. phoenix out of ashes



a smaller inscription in lower left corner says, plaque crafted anthony p. marra, youngest survivor of cocoanut grove fire .


on november 30, 2013, short street running through former site of cocoanut grove club, , named shawmut extension , renamed cocoanut grove lane . on-site renaming ceremony attended several survivors of fire , around 250 guests , spectators. speakers included marty walsh, had been elected mayor of boston, not yet sworn office.


the plaque removed in 2014 construction of new condominium residences on site, reinstalled in june 2016 agreed developer. few weeks later, plaque relocated corner of cocoanut grove lane nearby, @ request of condominium owners. relocation objected surviving daughter of anthony p. marra (who had designed plaque), support other interested parties. according boston globe article, condo owners stated occupy these homes our families part of bay village neighborhood , enjoy our homes in peace, without tragic memories, hanging wreaths @ our doors , tourists peeking our houses”. 1 of condominium developers has claimed new placement of plaque closer original location of infamous revolving door @ entrance nightclub, had become jammed in panic , had trapped many victims.
