as news of deportations , massacres in other parts of ottoman empire reached town, armenian population decided make preparations self-defence. on june 15, 1915 300 armenians, wealthy merchants, arrested. on following day, after further attempted arrests, fighting erupted , barricades erected in town s armenian districts. june 18 of districts had fallen or been abandoned. 5,000 armenians town , nearby villages, 75% of them women , children, retreated Şebinkarahisar s medieval fortress. surrounded turkish troops, directed heavy artillery @ walls. on night of july 11, food, water, , ammunition exhausted, armenians decided secretly evacuate fortress. however, attempt discovered , had left killed. on july 12 still inside fortress surrendered. massacre followed in armenian men killed. women , children survivors held prisoner in town before being deported of other towns. according official turkish records, during revolt armenian rebels killed 403 civilian turkish villagers.
