between wars flagship of atlantic fleet 1919 1924. future first sea lord john h. d. cunningham served aboard master of fleet, in 1922. 1924 flagship of mediterranean fleet. following refit, rejoined mediterranean fleet in 1927, went atlantic fleet in 1929, , later year returned mediterranean, served until 1937. during 1930s participated in non-intervention blockade during spanish civil war.


she rebuilt twice between world wars; in 1926–1927 bulges added, funnels trunked, 4 4 inch guns added, , new foretop installed. in 1937–1941 rebuild fitted tower bridge in place of old bridge; 6-inch (152 mm) guns removed , replaced 20 (10 × 2) 4.5 in (114 mm) guns , several smaller anti-aircraft guns; horizontal armour added; engines , boilers replaced; , elevation of main battery increased 30 degrees. deck armour increased 5 inches on magazines, 2.5 inches on machinery, while new 4.5 guns had between 1 , 2 inches of armour. received facilities aircraft launching catapult amidships. new fire control equipment installed, including hacs mkiv aa fire control system , admiralty fire control table mk vii surface fire control of main armament. reconstruction completed in january 1941, when britain had been @ war on year.
