she recommissioned in royal navy hms pomone. design inspired of endymion-class frigates.

1795

on 6 , 17 january 1795, pomone, under captain sir john borlase warren, arethusa, concorde, galatea , diamond, captured french vessels david , ormontaise, , recaptured phoenix.

on 12 february, pomone put sea squadron comprising frigates anson, artois , galatea, , hired lugger duke of york. anson lost topsail mast in bad weather on 14th warren sent plymouth.

on 18 february british squadron spotted 3 french transports. warren followed them , on 21st caught convoy of 20 vessels under escort of frigate believed french frigate néréide. warren pursued convoy lighthouse on Île d oléron halfway pertuis d antioche, capturing or destroying several of vessels, before had break off chase.

then on 26 february squadron captured schooner of 8 brass guns off Île de groix, near lorient. american-built curieuse (later corrected coureuse) , escorting convoy of 3 brigs , 2 luggers. sailing nantes brest clothing army.

between 13 , 26 february, warren s squadron captured , sent england following vessels: sloop petit jean, brig st. pierre, brig deux frères, ship petite magdalène, packet boat de cayene, schooner curieuse (coureuse), lugger liberté, lugger gloire, , brig transport biche. squadron burned 7 vessels: schooner brig désirée, brig 3 friends, brig trois frères, brig guerrier, brig liberté, brig espérance, , lugger patriote. british scuttled 4 brigs:graley, jean et marie, pierre, , anne. in all, warren s squadron had taken 9 prizes , destroyed 11 vessels.

on 15 april, warren , squadron chased french privateer jean bart, of 26 guns , 187 men, off Île de ré. artois made actual capture. next day pomone, artois, anson , galatea captured 2 vessels. galatea captured expédition, corvette of 16 guns , 120 men, had @ 1 time been british packet. british captured maria françois fidelle.

off belle Île, squadron caught french convoy. squadron burned , sank brig , sloop sailing in ballast. artois captured 2 sloops cargoes of fish. later artois reported had chased ship , brig convoy onto rocks near island of hedic, wrecked.

in june, pomone participated @ landing of ill-conceived , ill-fated royalist expedition quiberon bay. pomone shared in prize money capture, on 23 june, of french men of war, alexander, formidable , tigre.

on 2 september, pomone caught rude, of 12 guns, in bourneaux bay , burnt her. however, there discrepancies between british , french records. french records show crew of rude, of 3 guns (not 12), , under command of enseigne vaisseau non entretenu cheneau, ran aground on noirmoutier on 25 september block british capturing her. records agree on approximate location: bourneaux bay british name bourgneuf bay, , noirmoutier on bay.

on 15 october, melampus , latona, , later orion , thalia, , later still pomone , concorde, chased 3 french frigates, tartu , néréide, , 50-gun frigate forte, , brig-aviso (or corvette) Éveillé. british ships had give on frigates due closeness of shore. however, pomone , 74-gun third rate thunderer, had joined chase, able take eveillé, of 18 guns, , 100 men. french force had been out 60 days , had captured 12 west indiamen, 2 of which, kent , albion, british had recaptured. pomone , squadron had recaptured kent on 9 october. orion recaptured albion. warren s squadron returned england in december remnants of expedition quiberon bay.

1796

on 6 , 7 march 1796, squadron captured sultana , nancy. on 11 , 13 march squadron captured harmony, sans peur , agréable, on coast of france. on 15th, pomone captured 22-gun corvette robuste, had crew of 145 men. sailing brest l orient. royal navy took robuste service hms scourge.

some 2 weeks later, on 20 march, pomone, artois, anson, , galatea engaged french squadron escorting convoy near bec du raz. british captured 4 brigs convoy , warren instructed lugger valiant take them nearest port. (the 4 brigs illier, don de dieu, paul edward, , félicité.)

the british squadron engaged french warships escorting convoy not able bring them full battle before having give chase due onset of dark , dangerous location. galatea vessel in british squadron suffer casualties; lost 2 men killed , 6 wounded. store-ship etoile, under command of lieutenant de vaisseau mathurin-théodore berthelin, struck. armed thirty 12-pounder guns , had crew of 160 men. 4 french frigates, corvette, brig , rest of convoy escaped.

another small convoy fell warren s squadron on 7 april near bec du raz. squadron captured 4 brigs , sloop, 4 of sent in england. 1 brig scuttled. carrying flour , corn. 1 sloop escaped, did aviso voltigeur, of 16 guns, escorting convoy. 4 captured vessels marie, union, bonne, , brig of unknown name. on 18 april squadron captured jean marie.

on 25 may pomone captured french privateer fantaisie, of 14 guns , 75 men, near morlaix. 1 day out of port , had not captured anything.

commodore warren s squadron, including pomone, ran 44-gun french frigate andromaque ashore on 23 august near river gironde. boats galatea , artois boarded her. of andromaque s crew had endeavored shore, many drowning in surf in attempt. warren s squadron took on board captain, number of officers, many of crew, , number of portuguese prisoners 2 vessels french squadron andromaque had belonged had taken. 18-gun brig sylph destroyed french vessel gunfire.

between 9 august , 10 september warren s squadron captured or destroyed number of small merchant vessels andromache. these were:

jean porte, gabarre, of 140 tons burthen.
jean de blaignal, gabarre, of 140 tons.
liberté, chasse maree, of 95 tons.
catherine, chasse maree, of 80 tons.
marie anne, chasse maree, of 95 tons.
st. pierre, chasse maree, of 90 tons.

all these burnt @ mouth of garonne. remaining 3 captured.

véronique, chasse maree, 95 tons, loaded wine , brandy.
sloop, loaded canvas, taken lugger argus , cutter dolly on return plymouth rejoin squadron.

on 2 november thalia , artois in chase pomone joined. artois caught quarry 11 leagues ushant. quarry turned out franklin, armed 12 6-pounder guns , crew of 100 men.

1797

between 24 january , 7 march, warren s squadron sank or burnt 4 french vessels , 2 spanish vessels. french vessels sloops providence , intrépide, brig jenée, , brig of unknown name. spanish vessels brigs santa theresa , st jago de compostella.

in july, pomone , warren s squadron intercepted convoy in hodierne bay consisting of 14 cargo vessels frigate, ship, corvette, , brig escorts. british drove french 36-gun frigate calliope onshore , holed hull gunfire, sylph being particularly aggressive. brig sank gunfire also. burnt freedom, large british-built ship armed en flute , laden squared timber. french had run onshore , crew, wounded, had gotten away in boats. british captured 8 vessels:

thalia, transport carrying anchor weighing 6000 lbs., crane, flour, bread, beef, pork, brandy, soldiers clothing, etc.
brig, name unknown, laden brandy , wine.
brig, name unknown, laden brandy , salt.
brig, name unknown, laden flour, biscuit , mooring chain.
three chasse marees, name of unknown names, laden brandy, wine , provisions.
st. rené, chasse maree, laden coffee, sugar, etc.

a few days later, boats squadron destroyed 2 french merchant ships, brig fidèle , sloop henri, in hodierne bay. next day squadron captured boston. in august, squadron destroyed 1 french vessel , captured another. on 28 august, squadron chased , captured vessels french convoy.

1798

on 5 january, pomone 94 leagues off ushant when encountered large ship pursued. in haze, quarry underestimated pomone s size , armament , opened fire. 2 vessels exchanged several broadsides before quarry struck. french privateer chéri, nantes, , armed mix of twenty-six 12, 18 , 24-pounder guns. had crew of 230 men under command of mons. chaffin. engagement cost pomone 1 man killed , 4 wounded, plus damage masts , rigging. chéri had 12 men killed , 22 wounded, , had lost mizzen mast , sails, , had taken several holes hull well. reynolds took in tow , sent on carpenter plug holes when started sink. sent on pomone s boats , able off chéri, including wounded, before sank. 6 days later, pomone captured french privateer emprunt fossé, of 2 guns, in channel.

on 18 may pomone recaptured west indiaman minerva, of liverpool. had been prize french privateer brig argus, of bordeaux.

in september, pomone, hms argo, , hms cormorant convoyed large fleet of merchantmen , transports lisbon. convoy included east indiamen royal charlotte, cuffnells, phoenix, , alligator. on 25 september convoy encountered french fleet of 9 sail, consisting of 1 eighty-gun ship , 8 frigates. convoy commander signalled company s ships form line of battle royal navy ships, , convoy push lisbon. manoeuvre, , warlike appearance of indiamen, deterred french admiral attacking them; whole fleet reached lisbon in safety.

1799

on 3 april, pomone had fortune meet , capture argus after pursuit of 108 miles hit 12 knots hour. argus 6 months old , pierced 22 guns, though carried 18 brass 9-pounders. in addition minerva, argus had captured 2 brigs teignmouth masters , crews aboard her. argus had crew of 90 men.

six days later pomone recaptured american schooner had been sailing caracas corunna cargo of cocoa , indigo. had had misfortune meet french privateer gironde on 1 april. earlier, pomone had captured 2 vessels off cartagena, spain, french privateer mucius scaevola, of genoa, , spanish coaster.

in april pomone returned plymouth after having convoyed 3 ordnance transports minorca. went in refit.

1801

on 3 august, while cruising off west side of elba during siege of porto ferrajo, pomone, captain edward leveson-gower commanding, took prize, carrere, of 44 guns , 356 men. pomone lost 2 men dead , 3 wounded, 1 of whom died of wounds shortly thereafter.

less month later, on 2 september, frigates phoenix, minerve , pomone recaptured success , destroyed 46-gun frigate bravoure. (the french had captured success, 32-gun frigate, in february, off toulon.) in middle of month, men pomone involved in operations ashore @ portoferraio, elba.

pomone shared vincejo, pigmy, , privateer furioso in proceeds of capture on 2 october of bella aurora.

1802

in april pomone , kangaroo escorted convoy mediterranean. returned portsmouth on 16 july , on 23 july sailed number of other ships lymington , jersey collect dutch troops carry cuxhaven.
