on 4 march 2001, bomb placed outside news centre exploded, no fatalities. attributed real ira , culprits caught. front of building suffered moderate damage, repaired.
power failures
television centre has suffered power cuts affected normal broadcasting, these not seen systemic problem. 1 such power cut caused launch night of bbc2, on 20 april 1964, cancelled; programmes began next day.
a major power failure occurred on 20 june 2000 @ approximately 5 pm, affecting entire television centre resulting in services such bbc 2 , bbc radio 4 coming off air, , bbc news 24 went off air before being relocated bbc s westminster studios. 6 o clock news suffered severe lighting problems , had cancelled halfway through, , bbc s backup generator caught fire. troubles experienced in south east region, newsroom south east started later planned. fire alarms went off @ television centre later day, leaving skeleton crew. many programmes returned, different locations: newsnight presented main news studio intermittent technical problems. failure due substation in shepherd s bush , normal services resumed following day.
just before 8 am on 28 november 2003 electrical fault caused equipment overheat, set off fire alarms. although there no fire, fault caused widespread power cuts , prevented backup generators providing alternative power. output affected services transferred across london alternative studios. 1 o clock news , bbc news 24 broadcast of day bbc s millbank studios, , today programme , 5 live s breakfast morning radio shows fell off air 15 minutes. millbank studios fall-back news operations in event of tvc failure, , continually recording last hour of bbc news channel output (sans in-vision clock) purpose. power cut came on week prior relaunch of news 24, postponed week ensure problems had been remedied.

programmes have been interrupted protesters gaining access television centre. in 1988, group of lesbian protestors campaigning against section 28 of local government act 1988 gained access studio of 6 o clock news during live broadcast. newsreader sue lawley continued broadcast, while co-presenter nicholas witchell tackled intruders off-camera.
on 20 may 2006 during live broadcast of national lottery: jet set studio invaded members of fathers 4 justice campaign group, causing show go briefly off air while protesters removed. problem night s lottery broadcast ran straight eurovision song contest 2006.
for question time on 22 october 2009, bbc invited leader of british national party, nick griffin, onto programme first time causing heated public debate , strong protests outside studios. television centre had security breached around 30 anti-fascist protesters storming reception area , several hundred protesters gathering outside. police , security staff forced close gates leading centre , form barriers prevent further breaches of security.
