early history
following polish war , thirty years war, sweden held extensive control on lands on southern baltic coast, including pomerania , parts of livonia , prussia. wismar first occupied sweden in 1628. military occupation converted full ownership @ peace of augsburg. city became administrative center of of sweden s german possessions when royal swedish tribunal set in fürstenhof. necessitated build of wismar s fortifications, operation field marshal erik dahlbergh appointed lead. result self-contained fortifications bulwarks effective all-round defence system - system meeting modern requirements refined great efficiency. remains of these fortifications have been preserved, among other places, in ‘lindengarten east of wall of old city.
great northern war
wismar occupied coalition of danish, prussian, , hanoverian troops during great northern war of 1700-1721. resulted in destruction of city s elaborate defence system. after treaty of frederiksborg ended war, wismar returned swedish control. however, since sweden had lost several nearby possessions (such bremen-verden) rivals, wismar began lose significance became more of outpost of swedish control rather center of larger hub.
end of swedish rule
in 1803 sweden pledged both town , lordship mecklenburg-schwerin 1,258,000 riksdaler, reserving, however, right of redemption after 100 years. in view of contingent right of sweden, wismar not represented @ diet of mecklenburg until 1897. in 1903 sweden renounced claims on town.
