there 2 springfield hospitals, memorial medical center , st. john s hospital. third hospital, springfield community hospital, , later renamed doctor s hospital operated on springfield s south side until 2003. kindred healthcare opened long term acute care hospital in springfield in 2010, however, facility purchased vibra healthcare in 2013, , operated vibra under name vibra hospital of springfield.


st. john s hospital home prairie heart institute, performs more cardiovascular procedures other hospital in illinois. dominant health care providers in area siu healthcare , springfield clinic. major medical education concern in area southern illinois university school of medicine. major regional cancer center siu simmons cancer institute.


parks

the springfield park district operates more 30 parks throughout city. 2 best-known carpenter park, illinois nature preserve on banks of sangamon river, , washington park , botanical garden on city s southwest side , adjacent of springfield s beautiful , architecturally interesting homes. washington park has been home thomas rees memorial carillon since dedication in 1962. southwind park, on southern edge of city, has been developed park enjoying full compliance americans disabilities act of 1990. lincoln park, located next oak ridge cemetery president lincoln s tomb located, home nelson recreation center, boasts public swimming pool, tennis courts, , city s public ice rink, home of springfield jr. blues, minor league hockey team. centennial park, rests on outskirts of springfield s southwest limits, holds city s public skatepark, several ball fields, tennis courts, , manmade hill cardio exercises , sledding in winter months.

the owner of lake springfield, city water, light & power, supplies electric power generated dallman power plants city of springfield , 8 surrounding communities, company provides cities , towns water lake. in 2005, ground broken third municipally owned power plant. power plant has been completed , came online in 2009. natural gas provided via amerencilco, formerly central illinois light company (cilco).


transportation

interstate 55 runs north south past springfield, while i-72, concurrent 36 missouri state line decatur, runs east west. springfield served amtrak passenger trains, operate between chicago , st. louis , stop @ former gulf, mobile & ohio station. springfield served greyhound lines @ station on north dirksen parkway. local mass transportation needs met bus service. sangamon mass transit district (smtd) operates springfield s bus system. city lies along historic route 66.


border thoroughfare traffic handled veterans parkway , j. david jones parkway on west side, everett m. dirksen parkway on east side, sangamon avenue on north end, , wabash avenue, stanford avenue, , adlai stevenson drive on south end. far south corridor served toronto , woodside roads. thoroughfare traffic through heart of city provided series of one-way streets. fifth , sixth streets serve bulk of north–south traffic, fourth , seventh streets serving additional traffic between north grand , south grand avenues. east-west traffic handled jefferson street, entering springfield on west side il 97, , splitting pair of one-way streets @ amos avenue (madison eastbound , jefferson westbound).the 2 converge again after eleventh street become clearlake avenue, in turn converges i-72 eastbound past dirksen parkway. additional east–west one-way streets run through downtown areas of springfield, including monroe, adams, washington, , cook streets, stretch of lawrence avenue.


abraham lincoln capital airport serves capital city scheduled passenger jet service chicago/o hare, dallas-fort worth, fort myers (via punta gorda airport) , orlando (via sanford airport).


springfield , surrounding metropolitan area has constructed bike trails , bike lanes on number of streets. 4 main trails exist; 2 significant paved trails, interurban trail , lost bridge trail, serve springfield , suburbs of chatham, illinois , rochester, illinois respectively. lost bridge trail has been extended further springfield bunn lost bridge trail, follows stretch of ash street , taylor avenue. plans extend further still stanford avenue. third trail, wabash trail, extends westward northern end of interurban trail toward parkway pointe, regional shopping destination.


the fourth trail section, opened in july 2011, of sangamon valley trail spanning north south through west central part of sangamon county. section open of 2011 extends northward centennial park stuart park. trail, if completed in entirety, reuse entire sangamon county portion of abandoned st. louis, peoria , north western railway railroad line trail extend girard, illinois, athens, illinois.
