the 40 tonners found satisfactory in service, absence of leading carrying wheels resulted in rough ride.
selati railway
in june 1890, eugene, younger of barons oppenheim, sought obtain concession government of zuid-afrikaansche republiek construct railway line murchison range goldfields along selati river. work on construction of selati railway in transvaal lowveld began in 1893, line branching off pretoria-delagoa bay mainline @ junction near komatipoort. 2 locomotives durban , pietermaritzburg purchased natal government railways use during construction, 2 40 tonners acquired nzasm.
the project abandoned in 1894, due financial difficulties dispute arose nzasm on chosen route. work on railway resumed , completed central south african railways (csar) in 1909. line extended via gravelotte , tzaneen junction @ soekmekaar, met line pietersburg messina in 1912. in 1963, part of line through southern part of kruger national park, junction near komatipoort, abandoned , replaced new line present junction near kaapmuiden.
imperial military railways
in 1899, during second boer war, railway operations in 2 boer republics, zar , orange free state, taken on imperial military railways (imr). nineteen of 40 tonners survived war.
central south african railways
at end of war, when imr transformed csar, nineteen surviving 40 tonners designated class , renumbered in range 1 19. none survived in railway service taken onto south african railways roster in 1912.
