a copper-plate inscription of shaktivarman, dated 13th regnal year, gives describes him maharajasya-shri shaktivarmanah. composed minister (amatya) arjunadatta. inscription issued @ pishtapura, identified modern pithapuram. records grant of rakaluva area (modern ragolu in srikakulam district) brahmanas. area described being located in kalinga vishaya (district).
the inscription describes shaktivarman son of vāsiṣṭhi. according historian snigdha tripathy, suggests mother came vasishtha dynasty. such matronymics used earlier dynasties such satavahanas , ikshvakus. pishtapura under control of vasishtha dynasty, , shaktivarman inherited mother. scholars believe pishtapura capital of matharas. however, none of shaktivarman s descendants known have issued charters pishtapura.
the inscription suggests shaktivarman s kalinga kingdom extended godavari river in south. simhapura inscription of son claims shaktivarman ruled region between mahanadi , kṛṣṇavennā (krishna) river. claim seems exaggeration: during 5th , 6th centuries, area between godavari , krishna rivers controlled shalankayanas , vishnukundinas. also, there no evidence matahara rule extended mahanadi river in north. mahanadi mentioned in inscription seems different river in present-day ganjam district; joins rushikulya river near aska.

another inscription of king, @ madras museum, issued in 28th regnal year. names arjunadatta royal officer (deśākṣapatalādhikṛta); seems same daṇḍanāyaka mentioned in shaktivarman s inscription. arjunadatta s name appears in records of pitrbhaktas.
anantashaktivarman appears have been overthrown pitrbhakta king umavarman. officer mātṛvara later served deśākṣapatalādhikṛta of umavarman in simhapura. after anantashaktivarman, pishtapura seems have come under control of vasishtha dynasty. inscriptions of vasistha king anantavarman issued inscription city.
