cleveland street today. original street number 54 obfuscated large modern developments. post office tower occupies entire block , nominally number 60. block south nominally number 44 , being redeveloped use middlesex hospital. on left-hand side of street, long-standing king & queen public house saw hall come , go. washington brigade of chartists met there in 1848. on 100 years later radical folk singers met there — bob dylan gave impromptu performance in 1962.


the hall came owned west london methodist mission of hugh price hughes. foundation, active 1889 1916, dedicated helping poor young women. mission spent £1,500 convert mission hall. there seating accommodation 6 hundred people upstairs, , downstairs had rooms same number of people , kitchen. hall fronted three-story building held coffee-palace, classrooms , place of residence.


the hall reopened in may 1890. meetings held every night. american visitor attended opening of hall said meeting protracted , many souls converted. in 1890 hall said self-supporting. in practice, however, relied on generous donations. dedication service cleveland hall food depot held in february 1891. depot received , distributed gifts of food hungry.


the mission held coffee concerts, lantern talks , social hour young men , women after sunday evening service, many other activities. clara sophia [mary] neal ran club working girls @ cleveland hall 2 or 3 evenings week. said,



no words can express passionate longing have bring of beautiful things of life within easy reach of girls earn living sweat of brow... if these clubs ideal have in view, living schools working women, instrumental in near future, in altering conditions of class represent.



the girls club great success, in fall of 1895 mary , emmeline pethick left mission set own espérance club girls. wanted escape mission s institutional constraints , experiment dance , drama.
