due skip s lack of success on field , desire remain associated football, began investigate possibility of becoming coach. after skip told lou wanted start coaching, lou put list of potential coaches give him best training. list included tom osborne, joe paterno, , terry donahue, upon hearing of skip s interest, florida state head coach bobby bowden said, if can here in 2 days, ve got job @ florida state.

holtz s first job @ alma mater serve wide receivers coach, , filled position 2 years. in 1992, team began search new offensive coordinator. lou s first choice, joe moore, declined. lou asked skip recommendations fill position. skip said wanted position said of lou, couldn t @ time me [skip] being son. skip mentioned mark richt, offensive coordinator @ florida state. lou holtz called coach bowden ask permission speak mark richt. coach bowden said holtz hire richt long hire skip. coach holtz said, well, if m going switch coaches, might hire skip. skip became notre dame s offensive coordinator in 1992. between 1992 , 1994, skip , father recorded 40 wins, 8 losses, , 1 tie, 82.7% winning percentage. together, coached notre dame cotton bowl classic twice, beating texas a&m both times. skip had third-best total offense in ncaa during 1992 football season.

university of connecticut

following success @ notre dame, skip holtz asked become head coach of connecticut huskies. accepted offer , took first head coaching job on december 23, 1993. replaced tom jackson, had gone 14–19 on past 3 years , had decided resign on november 17, 1993. agreed four-year contract @ salary of $95,000 year. though skip came major football institution (notre dame), university of connecticut president dr. harry j. hartley said hire should not seen signal connecticut intends upgrade program. despite hartley s remarks, holtz planned elevate team i-aa i-a. holtz commented on hartley s remarks saying d love have opportunity coach division team here.... in 1998, uconn, after 100 years of football , 5 years skip holtz head coach, played in first division i-aa playoff game. huskies scored 2 fourth-quarter touchdowns beat hampton university, 42–34. in next round of playoffs, huskies lost eventual runner-up, georgia southern, on december 5. 2 days later, skip resigned head coach of huskies in order rejoin father, had taken head coaching job @ south carolina day before huskies loss. leader of huskies football team, accumulated winning percentage of .596 (34–23) on 5 seasons.

on december 4, 1998, university of south carolina announced lou holtz serve next head football coach. lou asked skip if move down columbia become offensive coordinator—the same position skip held during final 2 years @ notre dame. skip accepted offer, in part due desire live closer parents , children spend more time grandparents. in 1996, skip s mother, beth, diagnosed throat cancer. 2 years later, cancer spread liver, lung, adrenal glands, , ovary. meanwhile, skip , lou continued coach football @ south carolina. lou began struggle head coach, question of eventual successor arose. when skip hired in 1998, lou had included clause in hiring contract skip succeed him after retired. south carolina athletic director dave tanner rebutted saying, there no formal or informal guarantees @ him, , s helpful have potential succession in staff.

with firing imminent, holtz resigned. because formerly head coach, skip had several offers division i-a , division i-aa teams. after several interviews, elected take head coaching position @ east carolina university. east carolina announced skip holtz 19th head football coach on december 3, 2004. holtz assumed control of program won 3 games in past 25 contests. skip signed 23 athletes in first recruiting class, including first commit, rob kass. included in recruiting class future nfl player aundrae allison. skip s first victory @ ecu came in first game of 2005 season pirates defeated duke blue devils 24–21 @ dowdy–ficklen stadium. victory ecu s first non-conference division win since 2000, when pirates won galleryfurniture.com bowl against texas tech. during holtz s first season, pirates defeated conference foes rice, southern methodist university, marshall university, , university of alabama birmingham.

in 2007, holtz s team won 8 games, including wins on intrastate rival north carolina , going 3–2, verses conference usa east opponents. finishing second in east division, holtz team invited hawai bowl play #24 boise state university. east carolina won bowl game 41–38. first bowl victory since 2000 galleryfurniture.com bowl verses texas tech. first back-to-back winning season , bowl berth since 1999 , 2000 seasons.

the 2008 season opened 2 upsets on ranked opponents; 17th ranked virginia tech in week 1 , 8th ranked west virginia. first time conference usa team beat 3 ranked teams in row. skip finished season 9–5, included c-usa east division title , c-usa champions title. first time pirates played in c-usa championship game. first conference title since 1976. pirates played in liberty bowl, losing kentucky, 25–19. third liberty bowl appearance. last time pirates went 3 straight bowl games 1999, 2000 , 2001 seasons. in 2009 skip holtz led ecu pirates second cusa championship.

university of south florida

on january 14, 2010, announced holtz accepted head coach position @ university of south florida, in tampa, florida, taking place of fired jim leavitt. press conference introduce holtz community held january 15, 2010. when in crowd called out, beat florida! , holtz replied, s why m here! however, bulls end on short end of stick in match-up gators later season, 38–14.

holtz earned first win head coach of bulls on september 1, 2010 in usf s season opener against stony brook 59–14. later season, holtz lead bulls program s first victory on miami hurricanes. @ end of season holtz lead usf bulls dominant 31–26 victory on clemson tigers @ meineke car care bowl. mark first bowl victory usf on bcs team. bulls finished 8–5 record, 3–4 in big east play.

to start 2011 season, skip holtz led bulls emotional homecoming against alma mater, notre dame. after 6 hour game , 2 rain delays, usf left south bend 23–20 victory. however, bulls finished season disappointing record of 5–7, 1–6 in big east play. 2012 season worse bulls fell dismal 3–9, 1–6 in big east play. usf fired holtz @ conclusion of 2012 season.

louisiana tech university

on december 13, 2012, holtz accepted offer become head coach louisiana tech bulldogs. first season, 2013, down year, finished below expectations @ 4–8. however, 2014 see big turnaround. holtz s bulldogs went on finish first in c-usa west @ 9–5 35–18 win on illinois in heart of dallas bowl. in 2015, bulldogs continued success finishing 9–4 , winning new orleans bowl on arkansas state, 47–28.
