española founded introduction of railroads in 1880; railroads came influx in population, private education existed until 1905, when county saw demand public education. 2 high schools opened, santa cruz high school right out outside of española in 1908, , española high school opened in downtown in 1920. schools located on opposite sides of rio grande.
although both schools operated same school district, administrators believed merger of schools cost effective , best decision town. months later construction of evhs school began, location new school on el llano mesa, on española s east side. doors opened 10–12th graders in fall semester of 1975 on 950 students. first graduating class 1976, merce villareal first principal.
while new campus under construction sporting events remained @ old española high school due lack of funds. in 1979 new sports complex complete @ new high school campus along gymnasium, known today edward medina gymnasium.
