the paduraksa classical indonesian adaptation of classical indian gopuram. form of roofed gateway can found in couple of 8th 9th-century temple complexes in central java, e.g. prambanan, plaosan, , ratu boko. in later period, these gateways took more slender form. reliefs showing candi bentar , paduraksa have been discovered in 13th-century candi jago in east java. 13th 14th-century paduraksa of east java, such found hindu period of singhasari , majapahit, looks identical balinese paduraksa. in archaeological site of trowulan – 14th-century capital of majapahit empire – paduraksa named bajang ratu (javanese dwarf/defect monarch ), oldest paduraksa still stands. bajang ratu paduraksa entrance contains round holes, indicating double-leaf door once existed here.

the paduraksa still used upon arrival of islam period in 15th-century. name kori agung chosen paduraksa used non-hindu purposes. great mosque of mataram (mesjid gedhe mataram) in kotagede contains kori agung marks threshold mosque; tomb of panembahan senopati located. 16th-century menara kudus mosque, 1 of oldest mosque in java, has kori agung in compound , kori agung inside mosque. many kraton (palace) complexes of islamic java uses kori agung within complex, e.g. within kraton ngayogyakarta hadiningrat of yogyakarta sultanate, kraton kasepuhan , kanoman of cirebon sultanate , ruined kraton kaibon of banten sultanate. muslim cemetery complex utilized kori agung mark area tomb located, e.g. in imogiri cemetery complex. sendang duwur cemetery complex has 2 kori agungs wing-like architectural form, thought represent winged meru.
