london involved in pursuit of german battleship bismarck in may 1941. during time @ sea, many cracks appeared in upper deck , hull, due weight of new superstructure causing stresses. entered commercial shipyard on river tyne in october 1941 , under repair until february 1942. london spent march 1942 november 1942 in north atlantic on convoy protection duties in company of several navy warships. period of operations in heavy north atlantic seas caused hull cracks , popped rivets in lower hull, necessitating ship again going dry-dock in december 1942 strengthening of hull , fitting of newer , more refined radar, , of more light anti-aircraft guns. refit rectified hull , completed in may 1943, ship ready sea in july. after sea trials , loading of ammunition, assigned operate off south african coast , eastern fleet rest of war.
