on 12 june 1967, government (kerajaan brunei) introduced notes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50 , 100 dollars. notes 500 , 1000 dollars followed in 1979. in 1989, title on paper money changed negara brunei darussalam, official name of country, , malay term “state of brunei, abode of peace.” 10,000 dollar notes introduced same year. notes bear denomination in malay (in both rumi , jawi) , in english. english denomination appeared on obverse below denomination in malay on earlier series, appears on reverse jawi.
five series of notes have been issued. colours of $1, $5, , $10 notes have been same series of banknotes. [1]
1967 series
first series (1967) – currency portrait of sultan omar ali saifuddin iii, 28th ruler of brunei.
$1 – blue
$5 – green
$10 – red
$50 – brown
$100 – purple
1972 series
second series – series same first series exception portrait of sultan omar ali saifuddin replaced portrait of sultan hassanal bolkiah, 29th , current ruler of brunei. subsequent currency has portrait of hassanal bolkiah. in addition, 2 new higher denominations issued in 1979.

2004–2007 (polymer) series
polymer banknotes introduced in (2004) due high cases of banknote forgery. of them polymer. $100 note of series has won gold medal award security features in 22nd national print award in australia in may 2005.
the s$10,000 , b$10,000 notes world s valuable banknotes, worth usd 8000 of september 2014 (that officially in circulation). worth 8 times as next valuable, 1000 swiss franc note (usd 1063).
2011 polymer series

to commemorate 65th birthday of sultan hassanal bolkiah. shortly after notes issued, braille dots on upper left front corner of new polymer notes not raised. braille dots cannot felt tactilely, , not accurately rendered braille numbers corresponding denominations. specifically, spacing of dots wrong, , lack lead-in character indicates numbers follow.

this issued during silver jubilee (25th anniversary) of sultan hassanal bolkiah acceding throne. design of 1989 series of currency.
$20 – yellow (polymer, 2007)
on 27 june 2007, singapore , brunei celebrated 40th anniversary of currency interchangeability agreement (since 12 june 1967) joint-issuing commemorative $20 notes.
the 2 authorities issue distinct versions of new $20 notes. both yellow, 149 × 72 mm in size, , made of polymer. reverses identical except brunei version has state title in jawi script, while singaporean version has state title of brunei in latin script. obverse of singaporean version similar current portrait series, whereas obverse of brunei version similar $50 , $100 of 2004 series.
there limited edition set, consists of both versions in folder, matching serial number. notes have 40th anniversary currency interchangeability agreement overprinted on obverse. in addition, singaporean version has 2 countries state creates above commemorative text. 12,000 sets available, 10,000 monetary authority of singapore, , 2,000 brunei currency , monetary board.
the circulation version has been available since 16 july 2007.

in 2017, both brunei , singapore issued $50 polymer banknotes in commemoration of 50th anniversary of currency interchangeability agreement.
