2014 riots
in october 2014 least 35 people killed when riots broke out in city on turkey’s response civil war in neighbouring syria, blocking kurdish fighters crossing border syria. 17 of citizens fought fellow kurds died in syria during siege of kobanî.
2015 siege of cizre
during turkey–pkk conflict in september 2015, cizre blockaded turkish security forces, besieged town , placed curfew 8 days, after ydg-h, organization founded youth sympathize kurdistan workers party (pkk), in attempt @ self-rule, had raised barricades, planted explosives , dug trenches in city. during curfew town had limited access water , food , many of injured prohibited receive professional medical treatment. according turkish government, of dead pkk militants, however, according pro-kurdish peoples democratic party, 20 civilians killed. council of europe raised concerns disproportionate use of force security forces against civilians.
second curfew
on 13 december 2015, turkish authorities renewed curfew on cizre city repress kurdish militants. siege lasted until 11 february 2016. turkish army stated 659+ pkk militants had been killed during curfew. 14 february, 123 bodies reportedly amassed in local morgues, of bodies reported have been burnt. on 7 february, large-scale operation conducted in cudi neighbourhood , number of buildings hit artillery. turkish army claimed 10 pkk militants had been killed in operation, whilst pro-kurdish sources claimed killed civilians. pro-kurdish peoples democratic party (hdp) claimed 70-90 injured civilians had been forced stay in basements of buildings in cudi 20 days. on 11 february, military operations in city ceased. on 1 march 2016, announced curfew end following day. human rights groups claimed 263 had been killed, including @ least 92 civilians.
by march 2016, residents started returning devastated city. according ib times, level of damage city comparable siege of kobanî. prime minister ahmet davutoğlu pledged rebuild cizre.
in april 2016, turkish human rights association watchdog submitted report united nations detailing mass killing of on 120 kurdish civilians in cizre.
follow-up violence
on 26 august 2016, 11 police officers killed , 78 other people wounded when explosives-laden truck detonated @ police checkpoint 50 metres police station near town. state-run anadolu agency blamed kurdistan workers party attack.
