in 1990s original british trench system ( yorkshire trench ) discovered amateur archaeologists, on site of industrial estate near village. yorkshire trench first line trench 1 year between summer or autumn 1916 until summer of 1917. in spring of 1917, 173rd tunnelling company added deep dugout existing trench. completed yorkshire trench dugout served headquarters 13th , 16th battalions of royal welch fusiliers @ start of battle of passchendaele later year. bef had decided carry out operations in offensive of summer 1917 deep dugouts. east of ypres canal in close vicinity of yorkshire trench there several more dugouts, 7 of - south , southeast of yorkshire trench - finished 173rd or 179th tunnelling companies. of these, yorkshire trench, butt 18, nile trench , heading lane dugout double battalion headquarters, bridge 6 brigade headquarters, , lancashire farm dugout contained 2 battalion , 2 brigade headquarters. condition of ground made digging deep dugouts extremely difficult , dangerous. work had carried out silently , secretly, facing observant enemy few hundred metres away. 180 dugout sites have been located in ypres salient , in 1990s of them entered, @ least in part. yorkshire trench rediscovered amateur archaeologists , systematically excavated in 1998. although area part of large industrial estate, location opened public in 2003 yorkshire trench located close john mccrae memorial site @ essex farm.
