school life

curriculum

in lower 5 (year 9) , below pupils study broad curriculum including latin , 2 modern languages. there programme of games @ levels, , in fourth , fifth forms ict programme , general course called meno covers personal, social , health education (pshe) topics, study skills , subjects such philosophy , mandarin. pupils required take @ least ten general certificate of secondary education (gcse) , igcse subjects in middle 5 (year 10) , upper 5 (year 11).


in sixth form, pupils study 4 or 5 as-level (the equivalent of half a-level qualification) subjects 1 year, , continue 3 subjects a-level. many take extended project qualification (epq). in total, 25 subjects offered @ a-level. sixth-formers must take part in community service programme pupils volunteer in various local organisations around city.


academically, school 1 of highest performing independent schools in country. in 2010, 2011 , 2012 daily telegraph ranked a-level results 93rd, 78th , 38th respectively among independent schools in uk. sixth form pupils go university upon leaving school. around 41 percent enter courses in humanities , social sciences, 24 percent in science , engineering, 15 percent in arts subjects, 13 percent in medicine, dentistry , veterinary science , 7 percent in vocational subjects such business, management, physiotherapy , sports science. large numbers of pupils gain entrance golden triangle , russell group , other top universities.


the school runs student exchanges schools in france, germany, spain , liechtenstein, , there numerous trips overseas. in addition, school offers duke of edinburgh s award , young enterprise scheme.


houses

the pastoral care of school organised house system, first implemented under headship of w. f. brown in 1912. pupils allocated 1 of 8 houses upon joining senior school, or 1 of 3 houses in lower school, , stay house move through year groups. each house run housemaster, active member of teaching staff. each year group within house, called tutor group, run tutor monitors pupils academic progress, general welfare , extra-curricular involvement. tutor, first point of contact pastoral , academic matters, sees in tutor group daily registration , weekly longer tutor period. in lower school houses named after historic gates of norwich: conisford, heigham , magdalen. in senior school houses named after distinguished old norvicensians, head masters , benefactors of school, exception of school house, , each designated colour:



brooke, formed in 1912, named after sir james brooke, first rajah of sarawak.
coke, formed in 1945, named after jurist sir edward coke.
nelson, formed in 1912, named after horatio nelson, 1st viscount nelson.
parker, formed in 1912, named after matthew parker, archbishop of canterbury major benefactor of school.
repton, formed in 1975, named after humphry repton, landscape gardener.

seagrim, formed in 2009, named after derek , hugh seagrim, have distinction siblings have been awarded victoria cross , george cross respectively.
valpy, formed in 1962, named after edward valpy, 19th-century headteacher.

traditions

trafalgar day marked on 21 october each year service held in cathedral honour lord nelson attended school boarding pupil 1768 1769 under headship of edmond simmons. following service entire school gathers @ nelson s statue in close there laying of wreaths accompanied last post. each year concert held in recognition of dyers takes place in st james garlickhythe, london or school chapel. house music choral , instrumental competition takes place each year between houses , culminates in event in st andrews hall. since 1915 there has been annual race called cup run, successor of game of hare , hounds popular activity @ school. 6 or 7 mile course near trowse, today event held @ mousehold heath in norwich. sports day, first held in june 1861, occurs in trinity term each year.
