in 1864 congressional elections, party won 42 senate seats (out of 54 senators seated, not including vacancies due secession of confederate states), , 149 seats (out of 193) in house of representatives. these candidates ran under various party names, including national union, republican , unconditional union, part of overall republican/national union effort.
